FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April is Alcohol Awareness Month
Mentor, OH April1, 2022: Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers is proud to participate in Alcohol Awareness Month. As more people during the COVID-19 pandemic turned to alcohol to cope with unprecedented uncertainty and stress Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers remained open and continued to provided services to those that needed it most.
The number of Americans who died from alcohol-related causes increased dramatically during the first year of the pandemic, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Alcohol-related deaths rose above 99,000 in 2020 – a 25% increase from the nearly 79,000 deaths documented in 2019. Americans ages 25-44 had the greatest increase in alcohol-related deaths in 2020, rising nearly 40% according to the study.
“We’ve found that more people have been using alcohol as an unhealthy way to cope and manage stress,” said Melanie Blasko, President & CEO of Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers. “Alcohol has always been a significant public health concern. Add what the pandemic has created; a loss of safety and security impacting every facet of life including unemployment, working from home, managing children’s schooling and loss of loved ones, the programs and services provided by Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers are needed now more than ever,” Blasko says.
To spread the word and prevent alcohol abuse, Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers once again is joining other organizations across the county and state to celebrate Alcohol Awareness Month and help individuals cope with stress. Ideally, coping skills should involve activities that directly reduce stress or enhance your well-being. For example:
• Exercise
• Follow creative pursuits
• Get enough sleep
• Stay hydrated
• Eat healthy, nutritious food
• Take care of your emotional health, seek counseling/therapy
